§ 26-1. Definitions.

  • (a)

    The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this chapter, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Commissioner means the collector of revenue.

    Parish roads means those highways, roads and streets outside of incorporated municipalities maintained by the parish government.

    Tandem semitrailer means every semitrailer having two load-carrying axles.

    Through streets and highways means every highway or portion thereof on which vehicular traffic is given preferential right-of-way, and at the entrances to which vehicular traffic from intersecting highways is required by law to yield the right-of-way to vehicles on such through highway in obedience to either a stop sign or a yield sign, when such signs are erected as provided in this chapter.

    Vehicle means every device by which persons or things may be transported upon a public highway or bridge, excepting devices moved by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. A bicycle or a ridden animal shall be a vehicle, and a trailer or semitrailer shall be a separate vehicle.

    (b)

    The definitions set forth in R.S. 32:1 (Louisiana Highway Regulatory Act—Definitions), as amended, shall be effective as definitions of the words, terms and phrases used in this chapter. All words, terms and phrases used herein, other than those specifically defined elsewhere in this chapter, shall have the respective meanings ascribed to them in R.S. 32:1, as amended, and shall have the same scope and effect that the same words, terms and phrases have where used in R.S. 32:1, as amended.
