§ 26-31. General speed limits.

  • (a)

    No person shall drive a vehicle on the parish roads at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and potential hazards then existing, having due regard for the traffic on the road, the surface and width of the road, and the condition of the weather, and in no event at a speed in excess of the maximum speed established by ordinance.

    (b)

    Except when a special hazard exists that requires lower speed for compliance with subsection (a) of this section, no person shall operate or drive a motor vehicle upon parish roads at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

    (c)

    Except as otherwise specifically provided by ordinance, the speed limit of motor vehicles upon the streets and highways designated as through streets and highways shall be 55 miles per hour, and the speed limit of motor vehicles on all other streets and highways shall be 25 miles per hour.

    (d)

    Nothing in this section shall affect section 26-33, pertaining to school zone speed limits.
